Publishing with eLife combines the speed and transparency of a preprint with the scrutiny of peer review by experts.
At eLife we do not accept or reject papers after peer review: rather, every paper we review is published on the eLife website as a Reviewed Preprint.
A Reviewed Preprint includes the preprint itself, an eLife Assessment, Public Reviews, and a response from the authors (if provided).
You control how you want to revise your work, and you decide when you are ready to finalise a Version of Record.
We welcome submissions in all areas of the life sciences and medicine, and work with authors to make submissions selected for peer review available as preprints.
1. Submission
Authors may submit to eLife directly, or transfer a preprint from bioRxiv or medRxiv.
2. Peer review
Editors decide whether your submission is suitable for peer review by experts.
3. Reviewed Preprint published
Your work is published as a Reviewed Preprint two weeks after we send you the reviews.
4. Revise when ready
Revise your paper as you see fit based on the feedback from the expert reviewers.
5. Version of Record
You decide when to end the review and publication process. The Version of Record is widely indexed after author proofing.
Our publication fee is $2,500 (although the fee is waived for anyone who cannot afford to pay). Submissions of Review Articles, Feature Articles and Scientific Correspondence should use our legacy submission system.
For a limited time authors who would prefer an accept or reject decision instead of a Reviewed Preprint can submit Research Articles via our legacy submission system (where a publication fee of $3,750 applies).
